Why Self Care Isn't Something You Find Time For

One of the most common things I hear is: "I just don't have time."

I understand that feeling because I've said it myself. For years, I believed self-care was something I'd get to once everything else was done.

After work. After the laundry. After the kids. After the emails. The list goes on.

But here's what I eventually realized:

That day never comes.

We don't find time

We make time.

Life doesn't suddenly become less busy. The calendar fills back up. Someone always needs something. There's always another email. If we wait for the perfect season to prioritize ourselves, we'll be waiting a very long time.

Somewhere along the way, self-care became associated with expensive spa days and weekends away. While those things can be wonderful, that's not what I'm talking about. Real self-care often looks much simpler.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • Eating lunch away from your computer.

  • Going for a 15-minute walk.

  • Turning your phone off during dinner.

  • Stretching between meetings.

  • Going to bed thirty minutes earlier.

  • Saying no when your schedule is already full.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that our health, our energy, and our relationships aren't built in the extraordinary moments. They're built in the ordinary ones. The small choices we make every day eventually become the life we're living.

One question I ask my clients is: "Where can you protect the time you already have?"

This week, don't try to overhaul your life. Just schedule one thing that's only for you. Put it on your calendar and protect it the same way you'd protect a meeting.

It doesn't have to be an hour.

Even fifteen minutes counts.

Your calendar reflects what matters to you. My hope is that, little by little, it begins to reflect that you matter too.
